Key Indicators That Let You Know When Your Access MDB Files Are Corrupted

If you are a relatively new user of Microsoft Access, experienced users at your workplace might have told you to keep your eyes open for possible corruption symptoms in MDB files that store the Access data. You obviously would like to know what error messages would indicate that the MDB file being used is suspect or that there is damage caused to the MDB file.  Not all error messages displayed by Access during operation point to a corrupt MDB file. However, unless you understand what the error message implies, you might end up ignoring some that actually indicate corruption in the file. This may result in the file becoming completely inaccessible and attempts at this late stage to recover Access data may prove futile.

A good understanding of the important error messages that Access displays when it suspects that there is some damage to the MDB file will help you to quickly resolve the problem when the corruption levels are not too high. While some error messages suggest that a timely use of the Compact and Repair utility will help resolve the discrepancies in the file, others would indicate a more serious problem. The standard tools may then be unable to help in fixing the MDB file and you may have to use more specialized tools such as Advanced Access Repair from DataNumen to recover Access data reliably.

Some of the most common error messages seen while working with Microsoft Access and which would indicate that there is some corruption in the MDB file are as follows '

·        Error 2239: 'The database 'xxx.mdb' needs to be repaired or isn't a Microsoft Access database file' ' This would suggest that the database file has been damaged to the extent that Access can no longer identify the particular MDB file as a database file. This would mean you have to immediately run some repair tools to try and fix the problems.

·        Error 3259: 'Invalid field data type' ' This would indicate some mismatch in the fields of the records in the database.

·        Error 3011: 'Microsoft jet database engine could not find object MSysDB.  Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name correctly and the path name correctly' ' This can arise if some system object or database objects have been damaged leading to these errors.

·        Error 3343: 'This database is in an unrecognized format. The database may have been created with a later version of Microsoft Access than the one you are using. Upgrade your version of Microsoft Access to the current one, then open this database' ' Obviously, you may face problems trying to open a database file with an older version of Access. Upgrade your current version of Access so that you can then open your database.

·        Error 3049: 'Cannot open database 'xyz'. It may not be a database that the application recognizes, or the file may be corrupt.' ' If you have been working with the MDB file mentioned in this error message, it is quite possible that the file is damaged.

Since these error messages indicate that there is some damage in the MDB file, you should immediately use either the standard tools or more sophisticated repair tools to recover Access data.
